A business owner’s request to add U-Haul rentals to his menu of service offerings was denied by a Whitewater panel devoted to issuing permits and zoning-related matters.

Ray Ruiz, owner of Whitewater Quick Lube and Car Wash, went before the city’s Plan and Architectural Review Commission on Oct. 8 and requested permission to offer three stalls for U-Haul rentals on the premises.

The existing business is located at 1280 W. Main St. In his pitch to commissioners, Ruiz said he believes the high-profile location would be well suited for customers interested in picking up and dropping off rented U-Haul vehicles.

“We’re looking at doing it on a trial basis,” Ruiz said. “It would be an additional revenue stream. I think three (stalls) would be adequate for us.”

Several commissioners, however, laid out a litany of concerns, including past code enforcement violations linked to the existing business and logistical safety concerns onto the highly trafficked thoroughfare.
