Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge offers tour

A portion of the Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge, N541 County Highway H, Genoa City, will open to the public, and a hike will be offered from 6 to 7:30 p.m. tomorrow, Sept. 11.

The tour will be off the 86-acre Genoa City Tract, northeast of Genoa City on Highway H. The tract was acquired in 2013 by Ducks Unlimited, which restored farm fields on the site to wetland and prairie habitat. The site also features a woodland area with an in tact and diverse understory of native woodland flora. The property is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as an official piece of Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge.

Guests should turn in the lane at the new Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge sign and follow the signs to parking and should wear study shoes or hiking boots. Light refreshments will be provided.

The event is sponsored by Friends of Hackmatack NWR, a non-profit group that aims to connect people to the refuge and conserve and enhance the natural and cultural resources, rural character and scenic beauty of the refuge.
