Comets football team drops opener

The Delavan-Darien Comet football team had a tough season opener Aug. 17 at home in a 13-7 loss to Lodi. Lodi won the Division 4 state championship last year.

Despite losing 22 seniors to graduation, Lodi’s junior varsity team was undefeated, so D-DHS Coach Hank Johnson said the Blue Devils were still a very talented team, especially on offense. Johnson was very happy to hold that offense to 13 points and still be in the game until the very end despite four turnovers.

“They were fundamentally sound,” Johnson said about Lodi. “I wish we could have executed better.”

Johnson said the Comets just needed one big play, but it didn’t come. Johnson said his team seemed a bit nervous under the lights with many of them playing varsity football for the first time. Those first-game jitters, he said, led to the Comets not executing as well against Lodi as they had during the week in practice. Johnson said the team made some mental mistakes and some bad snaps that contributed to the four turnovers and the lack of production on offense.

The entire recap, including additional comments from Johnson, can be found in the Aug. 23 Delavan Enterprise. The Comets will host Milwaukee North tonight.
