Delavan-Darien School board approves November referendum

The Delavan-Darien School Board on Aug. 13 approved placing a referendum question on the November ballot asking for $2.8 million for four years on a non-recurring basis.

The failure of the district to get a referendum passed in April resulted in 39 teachers being laid off and Darien Elementary School closing.

The district put out a survey in the community that just fewer than 500 people responded to, and Interim Superintendent Jill Sorbie said the results of that survey showed support for what the district plans to ask for. The question will ask for permission to exceed state revenue limits for operational costs related to reducing class sizes and support curriculum and instruction in the district.

Replenishing the district’s fund balance is also a goal of the referendum, though it will not specifically be listed in the question.

More details on the referendum and other topics discussed at the meeting can be found in the Aug. 16 Delavan Enterprise.
