A men’s homeless shelter that travels among host churches in Walworth County and operates six months out of the year is looking to establish a permanent year-round location in Delavan.

The Spirit of Hope Homeless Shelter has applied for a conditional use permit to establish a shelter at 337 S. Eighth St.

The Delavan Plan Commission recommended the conditional use permit Aug. 6 on a 5-2 vote with Alderman Jeff Johnson and member Chris Lindloff opposed. The matter will go before the Delavan Common Council on Aug. 21.

About a dozen neighbors of the proposed shelter attended the Aug. 6 Plan Commission meeting and expressed opposition to the location of the facility, said resident Julie Muth, who lives nearby on Ann Street.

Muth said residents understand the need for the facility but feel that the middle of a residential area where many children live and near Wileman Elementary School is not a good location for the shelter.
