Elkhorn teen allegedly stole backpacks for homeless

An Elkhorn teenager was charged July 25 with breaking into a stand at the Walworth County Fairgrounds and stealing items that had been collected for a homeless shelter.

Dillon L. Leonard, 17, is charged with burglary of a building or dwelling and three counts of misdemeanor theft, all as a party to a crime.

According to the criminal complaint, the Elkhorn Lion’s Club concession stand was broken into between June 7 and June 12, and 10 cases of soda and 12 backpacks that contained blankets, socks and toiletries to donate to the homeless shelter were stolen.

On June 25, while speaking with a detective about a different incident, a 13-year-old boy revealed that Leonard and an 18-year-old man had bragged about breaking into the Lion’s Club’s concession stand, according to the complaint. The boy and two other juveniles received backpacks from Leonard, the complaint states.

Leonard admitted stealing soda from the stand and initially admitted stealing one backpack, but later said he “took a few of them,” according to the complaint.

The backpacks, soda and items in the backpacks, which included socks, gloves, scarves, blankets and toilet paper, were valued at more than $500.
