Though it’s early in the season for fresh produce, there were still plenty of items available at the Sharon Farmers Market, which opened for its second season June 15.

After several ideas were bounced around among economic development committee members, a market, it was decided, could help combat the challenges Sharon, and many rural, small towns face, by bringing visitors in on a regular basis. It began last year with John Nelson and his wife, Carolyn, leading the way. The Nelsons manage Toynton Funeral Homes in Sharon and Walworth.

The market averaged 15 vendors last year and Nava-Nelson said should be more this year. She said the market is a success because it’s a community endeavor.

“We get a lot of help from people in town. The chamber, the library staff and other friends… they come early to help set up and then stay throughout. They’ve been amazing,” she said.
