At the Lake Geneva Library at 6:30 p.m. June 28, author Michelle Caffrey will present her book, “Bring Jade Home: The True Story of a Dog Lost in Yellowstone.”

Caffrey will tell the true tale of a 15-month-old Australian shepherd who is lost in the wilderness of Yellowstone National Park after his owners are injured in a head-on collision. Previously, the longest a dog was lost and found alive in Yellowstone was two weeks. Each passing day that Jade goes missing breaks that record. Jade is occasionally spotted, and, against all odds, the young Aussie is alive. Caffrey will share photos of Yellowstone and Jade the dog and will talk about her writing process. A book signing will follow the program.

“Bring Jade Home” is a true tale of loss, the bond between people and animals, and the power of redeeming love. David Sowers and Laura Gillice are seriously injured in a car accident while vacationing in the park with their dogs. When they are ambulanced away, David’s dog, Jade, bolts into the over 2-million-acre wilderness and disappears. The young dog faces the threats of starvation, predators and the hostile landscape of Yellowstone. The day after the wreck, critically injured David leaves the trauma center in a desperate effort to find his beloved dog. Eventually an enormous search effort is launched, spearheaded by park employee Kat Brekken and fueled by social media. Against all the odds, the young Aussie is alive.

After years in the software industry, Caffrey and her husband, Paul, abandoned successful careers and bought a converted 1906 Dutch barge, Imagine. They cruised the European waterways for 10 adventure-filled years, while Michelle wrote “Just Imagine: A New Life on an Old Boat,” the story of their first-year voyage from Holland to France. The Caffreys now divide their time between Lake Geneva and Naples, Fla. Michelle Caffrey is a member of Romance Writers of America and a co-facilitator of the North Naples/Bonita Springs Writers’ Group. A nature and wildlife lover, she is a volunteer boardwalk naturalist at Audubon’s Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Naples, Fla.
