Failed referendum costs district another administrator

A failed attempt to pass a referendum April 3 for operating expenses and to upgrade facilities at the high school has cost the Delavan-Darien School District another administrator.

The resignation of director of special education and pupil services Sara Halberg was announced on June 11.

The School Board had already decided to move on from Superintendent Robert Crist, whose retirement is effective June 30. Director of curriculum and instruction Jill Sorbie will take over as interim superintendent July 1. Board President Jeff Scherer said Crist, who has one more year left on his contract, will be paid through the end of that contract.

“He did have a contract for next year, and we have to honor that,” Scherer said.

Scherer said the board decided, based in part on public input, to move in a new direction, though the decision does not help the district’s financial situation.
