The end of an era

Last week, Contract Comestibles, LLC. took down the smokestack that towered over Beulah Avenue for more than a century as part of a remodeling project at the custom food manufacturer’s 2004 Beulah Ave. location. The remnant of East Troy’s condensery, which began producing condensed milk in 1910 and later made baby formula as Baker Lab, was symbolic of one of the village’s first industries for many locals. It is sad to see something I saw everyday walking to school torn down. I hope the old bricks find a new purpose as they are so beautiful.
