Lakeland Players to present ‘Sugar’ the next two weekends

Director and Choreographer David Whitney, of Delavan, has put together a sweet cast for the final Lakeland Players production of the season. “Sugar” – a roaring, rollicking, dancing and singing take off of the classic movie, “Some Like It Hot” will take the stage in Elkhorn this weekend and next.

Joe, played by Kerry John Knolton of Lake Geneva, and Jerry, played by David Drettwan, of Elkhorn two penniless, unemployed musicians, work up a plan to leave Chicago after witnessing a mob slaying and becoming the target of gangster, Spats Palazzo.

To get out of town, they transform from Joe and Jerry to Josephine and Daphne and take jobs with Sweet Sue and her Society Syncopaters, an all girl band. On the way, they meet the bands’ lead singer, Sugar Kane, and they both begin a bidding war for her affection.

Whitney gives the audience a great look back at the 1930s with the production, according to publicity chairman, Linda Kouzes.

“He along with pianist Kathy Middleton, musical director Amberleigh Cellak, and the great cast provide a show stopping event,” Kouzes said.

“You can’t help but tap your feet to the jazzy sounds. To see this era on stage is very interesting and colorful,” producer Beth Sukala added.

Cece Danovich of Delavan, who plays Sugar Kanes, is always in relationships that fail, and often describes her life as “always getting the fuzzy end of the lollipop.”

What can the audience expect from the production?       “Nothing. Everything is unexpected. There’s a constant surprise everywhere,” Kouzes said.

The play will be performed at the historic Sprague Theater, 15 W. Walworth St., Elkhorn, May 11 to 13 and 18 to 20. Friday and Saturday shows are at 7:30 p.m., Sunday matinees are at 4 p.m.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the Elkhorn Area Chamber of Commerce, by calling 262-723-4848 or at lakeland-players.org.
