Brittany Neuman, a resident of Eagle, was named an initiative scholar by the Herb Kohl Foundation, and will now receive a $10,000 scholarship from Kohl’s foundation for college.

High School Principal Kari Timm and others in the district nominated Neuman for the award.

Neuman, a senior at the High School, has been a regular contributor in several school organizations and events. She has been a Student Council member, and has become the Student Council president. She is also the president of the National Honor Society chapter at Palmyra-Eagle.

Neuman was in the process of applying to a different Herb Kohl award, the Excellence Scholar. Timm invited Neuman to her office one day.

“I was in the midst of applying for that one, which is pretty extensive, and she told me to just not because the school was in the rotation to get the initiative award,” Neuman said. “So, she said I was chosen to receive it and explained what is about, and I was like, ‘Aww, that’s so nice.’”

Neuman said it was not only a nice gesture by the district, but one that will be greatly beneficial has she takes the next step to college.

“Having this scholarship has brought me a lot of peace of mind knowing the financial burden isn’t going to be as heavy. My mom is a single parent and that is one of the reasons they honored me with the scholarship,” Neuman said.

In 2013, Neuman’s father passed away from cancer, leaving her family with a single income since.

“That has always been a point of motivation for always pushing, living everyday like it’s your last, making other people proud and feel involved, and things like that,” Neuman said.
