basketball team learned that lesson twice last week.

The Comets fell to Union Grove 74-37 and Elkhorn 59-39 in Southern Lakes Conference action, falling to 0-2 in the conference and 2-4 overall.

“The struggles with our offense were self-inflicted last week,” D-DHS head coach Bob Beighton said.  “We are trying to do too much at the moment and trying to do it in a hurry.  Nothing good happens when you rush.”

Against Union Grove on Dec. 4, the Comets actually had the 16-8 first-quarter lead, but fell apart in the second quarter and were outscored 22-4, going down 10 at halftime.

In the second half, the Comets only put 17 points on the board while the Broncos scored 44 and went on for the lopsided 74-37 win.

Jesse Collins had 10 points and two steals in the loss.

Isaac Ramos added eight points, and Stephen Rodriguez had six points, four rebounds and three steals.

It was a similar story in the Elkhorn game Friday night as the Comets were able to keep it a close game in the first quarter, but then couldn’t keep the momentum going in the game.

After a 15-14 first-quarter lead by the Elks, they pulled away in the second quarter and had the 30-24 halftime lead.

In the second half the Comet offense only scored 15 points, and the Comets went on for the 59-39 loss.

Danny Supernaw had 12 points, Isaac Ramos added 10 and Collins had eight points, three rebounds and two assists.

“Now the trick is for us to improve our decision-making process,” Beighton said.  “We need to look for our scores in transition, and if we do not get it, be patient in our half court and execute.  Right now our trouble comes from the lack of half court patience.”

The Comets host Lake Geneva Badger tonight starting at 7 p.m. and Tuesday will travel to Wilmot for a 7 p.m. game.
