A portion of U.S. Highway 12 north of Whitewater is scheduled to be closed to through traffic starting next week to accommodate construction on the roadway.

Construction will start Thursday, April 12, just north of the Walworth County line in southeastern Jefferson County. The project will stretch approximately one mile from Buckingham Road to the county line on Highway 12 just north of the Whitewater bypass.

The project includes replacing existing pavement, signage and markings. The highway shoulders and the safety zone will be widened, which will modify a substandard horizontal curve to meet current design standards. Drainage structures, including the Galloway Creek box bridge, will be replaced with concrete box culverts.

The project should be done by August, said Jeremy Hall, project manager with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

“If everything goes well weatherwise, then we’ll be done on time,” Hall said.

Traffic will be detoured away from this stretch via Wisconsin highways 26 and 59. The exact detour will be posted when roads are closed on April 12.
