Williams Bay man allegedly ran from police

A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Feb. 23 for a Williams Bay man who allegedly had drugs and ran from police in Whitewater.

Rolando Hernandez Jr., 24, was charged Feb. 16 in Walworth County Circuit Court with possession with intent to deliver cocaine and possession of marijuana, both second and subsequent offense and near a park; obstructing an officer, resisting an officer and possession of drug paraphernalia, all as a repeater.

According to the criminal complaint, a traffic stop was conducted on a Jeep that Hernandez Jr. was driving at First and West Main streets in Whitewater on Feb. 7, and a K9 unit was brought in to examine the vehicle, which had dark tinted windows that prevented an officer from seeing inside with a flashlight. When the dog alerted to drugs in the Jeep, Hernandez Jr. ran from the vehicle, and an officer chased him, according to the complaint. Hernandez Jr. and an officer slid down a hill and became entangled in vines before Hernandez Jr. made it to Cravath Lake and ran out onto the frozen lake where the officer was able to take him down, according to the complaint.

The officer suffered a minor cut and bruising to his knee during the chase, and Hernandez Jr. ignored officer’s commands during the foot pursuit and resisted and tried to escape when the officer caught him, according to the complaint. When officers retraced Hernandez Jr.’s steps in the snow, they found a bag that contained 7.05 grams of cocaine on the ground, and 1.46 grams of marijuana and a digital scale were found in Hernandez Jr.’s vehicle, the complaint states. Both locations are within 1,000 feet of Cravath Park.
