CDA reviewing traffic counts as economic development tool

A Whitewater city panel is in the midst of reviewing traffic counts in the hopes of using the data as a tool toward bolstering economic development throughout the community.

The Community Development Authority on Jan. 25 combed through the information they have on hand, which, in some instances, is several years old. Several commissioners on the CDA board also inquired if additional intersections should be analyzed.

“It’s not an exact science,” CDA Executive Director Dave Carlson said of traffic counts. “We can’t draw definite conclusions from all of these. But I think this is good.”

Panelists reached a consensus at the conclusion of the discussion that a fresher set of numbers might be worthwhile so the CDA can reach out to prospective businesses with the most up-to-date information.

Several specific locales — including the intersection of West Walworth and South Janesville streets and the intersection of East Starin Road and Highway 59 — were pinpointed as high-profile areas that could benefit from a fresh set of numbers.

While more information might be needed, panelists noted big-picture information that challenges prior opinions of traffic patterns in different quadrants of the city.
