The goal for the East Troy High School wrestling team for Saturday’s Terry Kramer Open at Fort Atkinson was a fairly simple one. East Troy has its sights set on postseason success, and another chance to compete against bigger schools was just what the Trojans were aiming for.

And for the most part, the plan worked well.

East Troy finished right in the middle of the 16-team field with 232 points. Slinger won the team title with 364.5 points, followed by Sauk Prairie with 363, Waterford with 355, Kewaskum with 290 and Pewaukee with 271.5.

“The team wrestled well overall,” East Troy coach Mike Howard said. “There were some real tough weight classes, and we were missing a few kids, but the ones (who were) there battled hard. Most of the teams ahead of us were Division 1 except Evansville, who will be in our conference (tournament).”

Howard added he was pleased with how his team dealt with the tough competition all day.

“(That) is the key going into the tournament series,” he said. “We want the kids to be challenged and face tougher opponents. Conference is just around the corner, and the kids are stepping up how they train and their work ethic.”

Tommy Larson (106) and Chris Storandt (220) each ran the table to pick up individual titles.

Larson, who was 4-0 to improve to 32-3 overall, had two pins and a win by technical fall to advance to the finals, where he beat Slinger’s Carter Ziebell by technical fall, 19-4.

Storandt followed a similar, dominating path to the title at 220, as he moved into the championship matchup with four victories, including three by pin. In the finals, he beat Slinger’s Bennett Connolly by major decision, 12-4, to improve to 33-2 overall.
