The Elkhorn Area High School boys basketball team’s recent losing streak stretched to three games in a row after a 51-24 loss Jan. 19 in a Southern Lakes Conference game at Burlington.

The Elks trailed the Demons 16-15 at halftime. Burlington outscored Elkhorn 35-9 in the second half.

“We shot the ball the ball really poorly,” Elks coach Josh Skatrud said of the loss at Burlington. “They were, disciplined and our frustration got the best of us.”

Elkhorn finished with just seven field goals, did not hit a 3-point shot and went 10-for-13 from the foul line.

The Demons finished with 17 field goals, including four from 3-point range, and went 13-for-24 from the foul line.

Vince Umnus led the Elks with five points. Grant Tully ked Burlington with 11 points.

“It’s tough to lose three in a row, and we need to find a way to right the ship,” Skatrud said. “About the only thing positive we can take out of it was that our defense and rebounding was better than it has been.”

The Elks lost 74-59 Jan. 13 in a non-conference game at Whitnall High School in Greendale, and lost 79-68 Jan. 12 in a SLC game at Wilmot.

Elkhorn last won on Jan. 9 – a 56-42 SLC triumph at home against Union Grove.

The Elks beat Burlington 58-48 on Jan. 20, 2017 in a SLC game at Burlington. It is Elkhorn’s only victory against the Demons in boys basketball since Burlington joined the Southern Lakes Conference in the 2009-10 school year.

Elkhorn beat Burlington twice in non-conference play in the 2008-09 season. The Elks played in a previous lineup of the SLC and the Demons played in the Southeast Conference that season.

The Elks play a SLC game tonight at Waterford.
