Big Foot HS students visit capitol in Madison

A group of students from Big Foot High School visit the capitol building in Madison Jan. 9.

On Jan. 9, Big Foot High School students interested in government and law had a chance to witness both at the hub of it’s activity: the capitol building in Madison. Students in Business Law, AP US History, and AP government took an all-day trip to tour the capitol, visit with representatives for the area and attend a Supreme Court hearing.

The capitol tour kicked off the day, where students were shown the assembly and senate chambers, the Governor’s conference room, the public hearing rooms, and learned about the history of the building. After the tour, they had the chance to meet with Representative Amy Loudenbeck and Senator Steve Nass before the Supreme Court hearing.

Listening to the Supreme Court hearing was available to the students based on the Court with Class program through the Wisconsin Bar Association. The case they observed was Robert H. Shugarts, II v. Dennis M. Mohr, a hearing regarding the policies of an underinsured policy claim. Afterwards, the group met with Chief Justice Roggensack. Roggensack spoke to the group about the Wisconsin Supreme Court and answered several individual questions.

The day ended with a visit with the office of the Governor. Governor Walker was unable to meet with the group this year, so they met with Katie Ignatowski, who’s with Governor Walker’s Chief Legal Council.

Throughout the day, the group of students seized many special opportunities that were provided to them.
