Trojans travel to Merrill Invite this week

The East Troy High School wrestling team ran into a tough Rock Valley Conference opponent Dec. 14.

And in the end, visiting Evansville just had too much firepower for the Trojans.

The Blue Devils, who received honorable mention recognition in the latest wiwrestling.com poll, recorded seven pins en route to a 58-21 victory in the RVC dual meet.

East Troy had three victories on the mat, led by Tommy Larson at 113 pounds.

Larson, who is the state’s top-ranked 113 pounder in Division 2, pinned Evansville’s Gavin Frey in 2:41. Also picking up victories for the Trojans were Jake Dessart (170), 9-3 over Malcolm Johnson, and Jacob Price (195), by pin in 3:16 over Collin Roberts.

East Troy’s Chris Storandt, ranked fifth at 220 pounds, received a forfeit.

Where Evansville made up ground was with the seven pinfall victories and one by major decision.

Dropping matches to the Blue Devils were Mason Orgas (145), by pin in 48 seconds to Ben Barmore; Jackson Dedick (152), by pin in 5:16 to Pat Crull; Chase Coleman (160), by major decision, 13-2 to Nolan Kicmol; Austin Pogreba (182), by pin in 5:03 to Tyler Aasen; Jacob Mast (285), by pin in 1:19 to Branden Lange; Ian Newhouse (106), by pin in 1:46 to Nicholas Barmore; Joe Moede (120), by pin in 3:18 to Jared Miller; and Kaleb Curler (132), by pin in 1:36 to Adam Staver.

Evansville also picked up forfeits at 126 and 138 pounds.

The match at 160 featured two state-ranked wrestlers, as Coleman is fifth, while Kicmol is ranked second at 145 pounds. At 120 pounds, Moede received honorable mention recognition, while Miller is ranked 11th.

East Troy is idle until Dec. 28, when it travels to the 16-team Merrill Invitational at 8 a.m.
