Historical Society to host Veterans Day program

Honoring the sacrifices of those who served in the Armed Forces of the United States from Walworth County is the goal for the fourth annual Veterans Day program hosted by the Walworth County Historical Society, according to organizers.

It will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 11 at Heritage Hall, 103 E. Rockwell St. in Elkhorn. Representatives from two local organizations, the Daughters of the Union Veterans Civil War and the Daughters of the American Revolution, will be in attendance.

The keynote speaker will be Ron Borowski, a U.S. Army veteran who served from 1960 to 1963. He is now a Stars and Stripes Honor Flight volunteer and member of their speaker’s bureau and will share his experiences with the organization that allows veterans to tour various sites in Washington, D.C.

Earl Morse, a retired U.S. Air Force Captain and physician’s assistant conceived the Honor Flight program, in 2005. It began in Wisconsin in 2008 with a push from John Dean, the mayor of Port Washington. The first flight from Wisconsin flew 70 veterans to Washington, D.C. Money to sponsor the flights for veterans, who pay no cost for the flight or tour, is raised through charitable contributions.

The Veterans Day program will conclude with the introduction of veterans and current military personnel. Refreshments will be served and the Veterans Museum at the Walworth County Historical Society will be open for tours.
