Sheriff’s Office to have Drug Take Back

The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office, in cooperation with the Wisconsin Department of Justice, will coordinate a Prescription Drug Take Back initiative from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Oct. 28 at the following locations:

  • The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office, 1770 County Highway NN, Elkhorn. This site accepts prescription drug disposal 24 hours a day and can be reached at 262-741-4400;
  • Sheriff’s sub-station at Darien Town Hall, N2826 Foundry Road, Darien. The site will accept drugs from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 28;
  • Sheriff’s sub-station at Lyons Town Hall, 6339 Hospital Road, Lyons. The site will accept drugs from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 28.

Unused or expired medicine should never be flushed or poured down the drain, according to the DOJ. Water reclamation facilities are not designed to remove all of them and trace amounts of pharmaceuticals are showing up in rivers and lakes around the world.

All waste pharmaceuticals collected during Drug Take Back must be generated by a household. Business waste is allowed.

Residents may bring prescription and over-the-counter medications, ointments, patches, non-aerosol sprays, creams, vials and pet medications for disposal.

Illegal drugs, needles or sharps, inhalers, aerosol cans, bio-hazardous materials that contain bodily fluids or blood, personal care products such as shampoo, soaps, lotions and sunscreens, household hazardous waste such as paint, pesticides, oil and gas mercury thermometers are not accepted.

Participants may dispose of solid, non-liquid medications by removing the medications from their containers and disposing of them directly into a disposal box or into a clear sealable plastic bag. Plastic pill containers will not be collected because of the patient information on them and disposal costs. Blister packages are acceptable without the medications being removed.

Liquids will be accepted during this initiative. However, liquids, creams and sprays must be in their original packaging and evenly distributed within the boxes of collected solid prescription medications. Liquids without the original packaging will not be accepted.

Illicit substances such as marijuana or methamphetamine are not a part of the initiative and should not be placed in collection containers.
