Team looks to close regular season undefeated today

The Wolves 7th/8th grade team has earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Northern Illinois Football Conference playoffs following the team’s 50-8 victory over Hampshire last Saturday.

The Wolves got off to another fast start with a four-play drive ending in a Basil Demco 50-yard sprint to the end zone. After a three and out the Wolves had another 4-play drive capped off by a Demco 15-yard touchdown.

On the next Wolves’ possession Demco hooked up on a 70-yard pass to Ashton Robinson, who was tackled on the 1-yard line. Demco finished the drive with a 1-yard plunge into the end zone.

Following another defensive stand the Wolves had 29 seconds before the half. Head coach Dave Freymiller said that the team practices this type of scenario and during the game, the Wolves performed it to a tee with another Demco touchdown from 70 yards out.

The defense had practiced all last week on getting pressure and their efforts paid off, Freymiller said. Gabe Wilkins, Conner Vogelman, Billy Ziganto, Aiden Martin, Nick Minor and Bryce Harvey rotated in to the game to hold Hampshire scoreless in the first half.

Corners Ashton Robinson and Austin Cocroft also had stand out games, according to the coaching staff. Big Foot Chiefs starting center, Nick Freymiller, filled in for Coach Quackenbush as the defensive coach for the Wolves and “called a great game with a little supervision from me,” Dave Freymiller said.

The second half of the game featured a 45-yard pass from Demco to Tyler Wilson and two more Demco runs from 15 and 45 yards. The Wolves would normally go for two-point conversions following a touchdown but Coach Wilkins had put in extra time with kicker Neri Estrada, who was 4-of-5 on extra points that day.

The Wolves will wrap up the regular season at home Saturday against Harvard with kickoff set for noon.

Freymiller said the 7th/8th grade team has a chance to do what only one other Wolves team accomplished by going undefeated in the regular season.

“We encourage the community and former Wolves players to attend the game on Saturday,” he said.
