Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 243, Elkhorn, treated their chartering organization, the Elkhorn Lions Club to some tasty desert treats on Sept. 21 at Babe Mann Park in Elkhorn.

Scouts cooked a variety of Dutch oven deserts over hot coals near Elkhorn Lake, giving the Lions a taste of dinner in an outdoor environment.

The Elkhorn Lions and Troop 243 have had a long relationship of more than 25 years, with scouts helping the the Lions with fundraising events in the Elkhorn area including Chicken and Beef dinners and concessions stand at Antiques Fairs throughout the summers.

September was a particularly busy month for the scouts with a campout and canoe trip in New Glarus, a trip to Chicago and sailing on Lake Michigan. Fall fundraisers are underway to support all this activity, so community members are asked to keep an eye out for scouts.

The troop visited the Windy City on Sept. 23, riding into Chicago on the Metra Train out of Harvard, Ill. Once there, they visited Millennium Park, cooling off in the fountains on the 90-degree day before heading over to Navy Pier along the Lake Front Trail to sail on the Tall Ship Windy, a 148-foot traditional, four-masted gaff topsail schooner. Scouts assisted with the raising of the sails and then relaxed on the deck, enjoying the cooler breeze of Lake Michigan while looking at the amazing Chicago skyline. Scouts returned to the train station by way of the Chicago Riverwalk.

Boy Scout Troop 243 offers a year-round adventure-based program designed to offer and encourage effective character, citizenship and leadership training for boys ages 11 to 17, to help them make ethical and moral choices over their lifetime.
