Elks swim to sixth at Waunakee

The Elkhorn Area High School girls swim team medaled in four events and finished sixth Oct. 7 in the Warrior Swim Invitational at Waunakee High School.

The Elks lost 114-56 Oct. 3 in a Southern Lakes Conference dual meet at Badger High School in Lake Geneva.

Elkhorn competed at home Tuesday in a SLC dual meet against Delavan-Darien ad will swim Saturday in an invitational at Janesville Craig High School.

The Elks’ best finish at Waunakee came from Paige Murphy, Sydney Balboni, Sarah Broga and Ana Manak in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Elkhorn finished fourth in 1:50.40.

Murphy, Alyssa Ambrose, Balboni and Manak finished fifth in the 200 medley relay (2:04.83).

Freshman Kaylee Dodge finished sixth in the 500-meter freestyle in 6:07.84.

“I was really pleased with Kaylee Dodge’s performance in the 500,” Elks coach Jamie Richardson aid. “It was neck and neck, down to the wire. I was really proud of her digging deep and wanting it at the end.”

Allison Schopf, Balboni, Emma Olson and Broga finished sixth in the 400 freestyle relay (4:08.73).

Richardson praised the performance of exchange student Nienke Verhoeven, who is swimming competitively this season for the first time.

Verhoeven finished ninth in the 50 breaststroke (47.31) and 12th in the 100 breaststroke (1:22.76).

“She’s really coming along,” Richardson said. “She is really strong, and she does a great job in the weight room getting herself stronger.”

Against Badger Co-op, Murphy won the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.41) and swam with Balboni, Broga and Manak on the Elks’ first-place 200 freestyle relay (1:50.78).
