Man allegedly stole keys to flee in owner’s truck

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 9 for a Milwaukee man charged with trying to steal a truck in the Town of Sugar Creek after he crashed his car.

Cannon Martin, 47, was charged Sept. 19 in Walworth County Circuit court with burglary of a building or dwelling, operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent and criminal damage to property.

After Martin crashed his car on Sept. 14, he broke into a home about a half mile away in the Town of Sugar Creek, took the keys to the homeowner’s truck and tried to drive away in the truck, according to the criminal complaint.

The homeowner said Martin drove the truck in reverse, backed into heavy shrubs and brush next to the driveway and scratched the rear quarter panel of the truck, according to the complaint.

Martin accelerated and tried to drive away, but the homeowner reached in the truck and removed the keys. Martin then ran from the home, but police caught him, according to the complaint.

Martin apologized and told police someone had chased him from Milwaukee until he crashed, and he didn’t know where he was, according to the complaint. He said he needed a vehicle to “get out of there,” according to the complaint.
