Village of East Troy Police Chief Alan Boyes announced this week he will be retiring in January and Deputy Chief Jeremy Swendrowski is being promoted to chief.

“It’s time to retire,” Boyes said Friday. “For me, personally, it’s time. I’ve had 10 wonderful years here and that’s a great milestone. It will be almost 40 years in law enforcement and it’s just time.”

Boyes said he chose to announce his retirement now, because he wanted to give the Village Board enough notice so it could decide if it wanted to promote from within or hire from the outside.

“I did recommend Jeremy for the position,” Boyes said. “It was an easy recommendation for me.”

The board followed the chief’s recommendation and the village has posted the position of deputy chief for hire at $68,000 to $77,000 a year, depending on experience and qualifications.

As for Boyes, he said he’s looking forward to this new chapter in his life and has high hopes for the village and the police force.

“You always hope you make a difference,” he said. “You hope you make a place better and I hope I did that. And if I did that, I hope Jeremy will build on that.”
