Lady Chiefs tennis team wins three of four

The Big Foot-Williams Bay girls tennis team closed out its RVC dual meet schedule Monday afternoon with a 5-2 win at Whitewater.

Picking up singles wins for the Chiefs were sophomore Clare Heckert at No. 1, 6-2, 6-2 over Sydney Treder; senior Hannah Schmidt at No. 3, 6-2, 6-4 over Cassidy Lane; and sophomore Keaton Sperling at No. 4, 4-6, 6-2 (14-12).

Winning in doubles were seniors Meredith Heckert and Izzy Klesmith at No. 1, 6-0, 6-0 over Maggie Hough and Hailey Lohmeier and senior Nikita Jones and junior Claire Beyers at No. 3, 7-6 (3), 6-2 over Abby Gnatzig and Marissa Mueller.

Falling to the Whippets were sophomore Hannah Palmer at No. 2 singles, 4-6, 7-6 (4), (8-10) to Hannah Delaney and senior Samantha Hartwig and sophomore Annie Rowe at No. 2 doubles, 7-6 (11-9), 3-6, (6-10) to Odessa Sonn and Sophie Olson.

“We played some of our best tennis of the season (Monday) night,” Big Foot assistant coach Dani Lawler said.

The win Monday came on the heels of a 2-0 record at Saturday’s Burlington Triangular, as the Chiefs beat Indian Trail, 5-2, and Burlington, 4-3. Big Foot opened its week with a tough 4-3 loss to McFarland on Sept. 14.

Winning at singles against Indian Trail were Clare Heckert at No. 1, 6-4, 6-1; Schmidt at No. 3, 6-1, 6-1; and Sperling at No. 4, 6-1, 6-4. Earning doubles victories were Meredith Heckert-Klesmith at No. 1, 6-3, 6-2 and Hartwig-Rowe at No. 2, 2-6, 7-6 (5) (10-8).

Falling to the Hawks were Palmer at No. 2 singles, 1-6, 1-6 and Jones-Beyers at No. 3 doubles, 3-6, 2-6.

Recording victories in the dual with Burlington were Clare Heckert at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1; Palmer at No. 2, 6-1, 7-5; Sperling at No. 4, 3-6, 6-4 (13-11); and Meredith Heckert-Klesmith at No. 1 doubles, 7-6 (2), 6-2).

Schmidt fell at No. 3 singles, 5-7, 1-6, while Hartwig-Rowe at No. 2 doubles lost 0-6, 4-6 and Jones-Beyers at No. 3 lost 4-6, 1-6.

Big Foot traveled with an extra doubles team, as senior Lindsey Coleman and Morgan Berg split a pair of matches at No. 4. They defeated Indian Trail, 6-1, 6-4, and fell, 3-6, 6-3 (6-10) to Burlington.

In the first dual of the week, the Chiefs picked up singles wins at No. 1 and 3, as Clare Heckert won, 6-1, 6-1, and Schmidt won, 4-6, 6-1 (10-4) at No. 3. Meredith Heckert-Klesmith posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles.

Big Foot competed in the RVC Tournament on Thursday afternoon at UW-Whitewater. The Chiefs travel to Wilmot on Tuesday to face the Panthers in a nonconference dual meet.
