The Elkhorn Area High School boys soccer team scored 12 goals and finished with three shutouts last week.

Coach BZ Kayser will tell you the 12 goals is not enough.

Elkhorn beat Racine St. Catherine’s 2-0 Sept. 16 in a non-conference match at home. The Elks beat Wilmot 5-0 Sept. 14 in a Southern Lakes Conference match at Wilmot, and defeated Burlington 5-0 Sept. 12 at Elkhorn.

Elkhorn (6-1-4, 2-0-1 SLC) played Westosha Central Tuesday at Paddock Lake, and plays today at home against Waterford, in SLC matches. The Elks play a non-conference match Saturday at home against Milton.

“We controlled all three games, in terms of possession,” Kayser said of the matches against St. Catherine’s, Wilmot and Burlington. “We should have scored a lot more goals.”

St. Catherine’s is the No. 1 ranked team in Division 4 in the most recent Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association state rankings. The Elks are ranked seventh in Division 2.

Luke Umnus scored for the Elks in the 13th minute, off an assist from Leo Loredo. Umnus returned the favor in the 86th minute and assisted Loredo’s goal for a 2-0 Elkhorn advantage.

“We were pretty physical, and possessed the ball more than they did,” Kayser said. “We outshot them 25-5, and I don’t think they had five good shots. We should have easily won that one 5-0, 6-0 or 7-0.”

Kayser said the Elks dominated possession and played exceptional defense against both Wilmot and Burlington.

“It was business as usual,” Kayser said. “With those two teams, we controlled the whole games. With both of them, we didn’t give either team many opportunities.”

Elkhorn led Wilmot 2-0 at halftime after goals from Kevin Romero and Adam Riegle.

Umnus scored in the second half, and Riegle added two more goals to his tally. Riegle’s final strike came on a penalty kick in the 78th minute.

Five different players scored for the Elks against Burlington. Ben Burrows, Caden Reece, Romero and Umnus tallied first-half goals, and gave Elkhorn a 4-0 halftime lead. Loredo scored in the second half.
