Yerkes Observatory offers ‘star party’

Yerkes Observatory is hosting a public observing night on their lawn from 8 to 10 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 23.

Throughout the year, Yerkes holds public observing events in which people can enjoy constellations, observe celestial objects through lawn telescopes, and learn through hands-on astronomy activities.

These “star parties” are held regardless of weather. This month, attendees can learn about historical astronomy while taking in the sights of Yerkes’ dark sky.

“As we’re heading back to school, we’re appreciating all those who came before us and discovered the cool things we can now learn about the universe. Join us as we appreciate historical astronomers, and enjoy the same beautiful sky they observed so long ago,” according to Yerkes website.

“As always, you’ll be able to enjoy the lovely views through our telescopes, observing stars, globular clusters, nebulae, galaxies, and, this month, the planet Saturn. As well, explore our hands-on activities for all ages, surrounding the theme of historical astronomy,” the site further states.

If the skies are cloudy, Yerkes staff will offer a variety of astronomy activities available indoors, allowing attendees to enjoy “a fun and educational evening.”

Children must be accompanied by adults and pets are not allowed.

The fee for the Sept. 23 event – via cash at the door – is $5 per person for children 7 years old and older, and adults. Children 6 and younger can attend for free).

Space is limited but as of press time, openings remained. Those planning to attend must pre-register online at yerkesoutreach.org under the tab “star parties.”

Yerkes Observatory is at 373 W. Geneva St., Williams Bay.
