Netters earn opening weekend wins

The Big Foot-Williams Bay girl tennis team certainly logged some miles in its first week of competition.

In a two-day span, the Chiefs played six dual meets at two different locations, as part of the Badger Invitational.

Big Foot, which competed at Burlington on Friday and at Palmer Park in Janesville on Saturday, emerged with a 2-4 overall record.

The Chiefs defeated Milton, 4-3, Friday, and Janesville Parker, 4-3, Saturday. Big Foot dropped dual decisions to Madison Edgwood (6-1), to Burlington (4-3), to Stoughton (5-2) and to Kenosha Indian Trail (4-3).

Leading the way was the No. 1 doubles duo of seniors Izzy Klesmith and Meredith Heckert, who were 5-0 overall. Klesmith also paired with senior Claire Heckert in one match, a 6-3, 6-3 win over Madison Edgewood of seniors Megan Powell and Kendall Wilhelmson, they fell in the first set, 5-7, but bounced back to win the next two, 6-4 and 10-3 in the tiebreaker.

The Klesmith-Meredith Heckert team won four of their matches in straight sets. In the finale against Indian Trail’s team of Big Foot’s No. 2 team of seniors Sam Hartwig and Nikita Jones finished

4-2 at No. 2 doubles, while Claire Heckert was 3-1 at No. 1 singles.

Also picking up victories during the weekend were sophomore Keaton Sperling at No. 2 singles, 4-6, 6-1 (10-8) against Milton; Sam Hartwig and sophomore Hannah Palmer at No. 2 doubles, 6-0, 6-3 over Milton and 6-4, 65-1 over Burlington; senior Jenna Fort at No. 4 singles over Janesville Parker, 6-7 (3), 6-4 (10-2); and seniors Lindsey Coleman and Penny Brooks at No. 3 doubles over Parker, 6-4, 6-1.
