Teen pleads guilty

Lesser charges in videotaping sex case could lead to jail time, fines

A felony charge against a Genoa City teenager for his role in circulating images of a sexual encounter with a Badger High School classmate was dismissed. Instead, Tias L. Larson, now 18, pleaded guilty July 7 to three misdemeanor charges – sex with a child 16 years old or older, exposing a child to harmful materials and exposing his genitals to a child.

He is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 4 on the three Class A misdemeanor, which carry total maximum penalties of $30,000 in fines and two years, three months in prison. Had he been convicted of the Class F felony, he would have faced up to $25,000 in fines and 12 1/2 years in prison.

Larson and Blake A. Dodd, 17, were Badger High School students who allegedly had sex with a then-16-year-old girl, also a Badger student, videotaped and photographed the encounter and then shared the images with other students.

Dodd also is charged with sexual exploitation of a child by videotaping a person younger than 18 years old and is scheduled for a final pretrial hearing Sept. 12 with a three-day jury trial to follow Sept. 20 to 22.

According to the criminal complaint, the girl invited Dodd to her home Feb. 19, 2016, to hang out and watch a movie. Dodd brought Larson, both of whom were also 16 years old at the time, and the two boys simultaneously had sex with the girl, the complaint alleges.

According to the criminal complaint, the girl told police Dodd and Larson took turns having sex with her and repeatedly switched positions. The girl said the boys would say “switch” before they switched positions and were laughing and “high-fiving” during the incident, according to the complaint.

The incident occurred Feb. 19, 2016, and the girl discovered Feb. 26, 2016, that people around Badger High School were talking about having seen pictures and videos of the encounter that she did not know existed, according to the complaint.
