Scholarship winners announced

On May 6 at its annual brunch, the Geneva Lake Branch of the American Association of University Women recently honored the 2017 STEM Scholarship winners, middle school students from throughout Walworth County, from the left: Riley Summers, Walworth; Lea Connolly, Elkhorn; Esther Coltman, Lake Geneva; Molly Bergstrom, Lake Geneva; Lauren Glos, Sharon; Abigail Juszczyk, Brookwood; Lindsey McIntyre, Walworth; Autumn Schwenk, Elkhorn; and Stella Southwick, Reek. This summer, the girls will attend a week at Camp Badger Exploring Engineering at UW-Madison to learn more about science, technology, engineering, and math. A recent study shows that women earn only 21 percent of bachelor’s degrees in engineering and 19 percent in computer science. This scholarship program was started in 2010 to help change those statistics, according to the local chapter. At the end of the summer, the branch will have sent 78 young women to Camp Badger. The chapter thanks the Walworth/Fontana Rotary for its support of this AAUW program. (Submitted photo)
