A 22-year man drown and his companion was rescued Thursday evening when their kayaks overturned on Geneva Lake, according to the Lake Geneva Fire Department.
The department was dispatched to the lake in an area just off shore of Covenant Harbor Bible Camp, 1724 W. Main St., at 6:27 p.m. for a report of a possible drowning.
The kayaks the two were using flipped and the man went under and did not surface, according to the fire department. The woman he was with was rescued by a passerby. The two were not wearing flotation devices, fire officials said, and the water temperature at the time was 54 degrees.
According to fire officials, a rapid search was initiated using boats, divers, sonar, and shore support. A mutual aid alarm was activated, which brought assistance from other fire and rescue units in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.
The victim was located and recovered within an hour of the department’s arrival, according to the fire department. Resuscitation efforts were not successful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
