Fort Atkinson man suffers multiple injuries in crash

The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a two-vehicle crash that shut down Highway 12 near Indian Mound Parkway in Whitewater for several hours early Tuesday morning.

David L. Wegner, 54, of Fort Atkinson, suffered multiple injuries and was transported by Flight for Life to an area hospital following the incident, which happened at 4:38 a.m., according to a press release from the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office. His condition is not known at this time.

Wegner was trapped in his 2004 GMC Envoy and had to be extricated by Whitewater Fire and Rescue crews after he was struck head-on by another vehicle.

A preliminary investigation revealed William D. Fojut, 53, of Whitewater was traveling westbound on Highway 12 in a 2009 Chevrolet pickup truck when crossed the center line, entered the eastbound lane and struck Wegner.

Fojut was taken by ambulance to an area hospital where he was later released with minor injuries.

Both men were wearing their seatbelts and both vehicles had airbag deployment.  Neither alcohol nor drugs are considered to be a factor, the press release said.

The Walworth County Crash Investigation Unit was summoned to the scene to coordinate the investigation.

The Whitewater Police Department and Whitewater Fire and Rescue Departments assisted the Sheriff’s Office.
