Darien man killed while walking on Highway 14

A Darien man was killed Saturday after being struck by a trailer while walking on Highway 14.

Austin Fehrm, 30, was struck by a trailer being pulled by a pick-up truck on Highway 14 near S-D Townline Road at about 6:05 p.m. Saturday, according to the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office.

An initial investigation revealed Fehrm was walking near the edge of the roadway when the trailer, which consisted of dual tanks of anhydrous ammonia used for agriculture purposes, struck him, according to the office. Brian Gunnink, 51, of Darien, was driving the pick-up truck pulling the trailer.

Rescue personnel attempted to save Fehrm, but he was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:43 p.m.

The crash remained under investigation early this week by the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Team and the Wisconsin State Patrol Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspectors.
