‘Putting Your Best Fork Forward’

Walworth County WIC offers reminders for National Nutrition Month

March is National Nutrition Month and this year’s theme is “Putting Your Best Fork Forward,” a healthy reminder that every bite counts, according to a press release from the Walworth County WIC program, a special supplemental nutrition program for woman, children and infants.

As the old saying goes, “you are what you eat,” and your fork is one tool that you use regularly that can make a big impact on your health. To help you work towards putting your best fork forward, below are some suggestions to find a nutritious and enjoyable way of eating:

  • Find a “diet” that works for you – if you can’t see yourself eating a certain way for the rest of your life, chances are that “diet” isn’t going to work for you. Find healthy foods you already love and add more of them to your meals;
  • Practice, Practice, Practice – cooking at home can be a scary task at first when you’re not used to it. With repetition and trying new and healthy ingredients, your cooking skills will improve and most likely so will your health;
  • Quality vs. Quantity – how much you eat is just as important as the types of foods you eat. One hundred calories of grapes is going to give you much more nutrition than 100 calories of candy. Find the right amounts using the USDA-sponsored tool at www.myplate.gov;
  • Do What You Love – find ways to be active that you enjoy, and do those activities most days of the week. There’s more to exercise than just running or lifting weights. Take a dog for a walk, play basketball with your kids, or dance to fun music;
  • Work SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-based) toward a healthy weight – low and steady wins the race when managing weight. Set goals that are “SMART” to help you achieve them;
