Trewyn helps Warhawks stay undefeated in WIAC

Former Whippet Brooke Trewyn led the Warhawks in scoring against the University of Wisconsin-River Falls women’s basketball team, a win for the team that propelled their conference record to 3-0.

Trewyn gave the Warhawks a five-point lead midway through the first quarter on a three-pointer to make it 10-5. Later in the quarter, the Warhawks increased their lead with a basket and a successful free throw from Trewyn to make it 26-12.

With 7:20 remaining in the second quarter, senior Reilly Stewart pushed the lead to 24 with a three-pointer.

The Falcons cut the lead down to 16 at the half after a layup from Hayley Rau and a three-pointer from Katie Messman.

Midway through the third quarter, the Warhawks lead was pushed back to 18 after a three-pointer from sophomore Emily Kraft to make it 49-31. Trewyn responded with 1:24 left in the quarter, Messman hit two free throws from the line to make it 52-38.

The Falcons cut the Warhawks lead down to 10 twice in the fourth before a Becky Raeder free throw with 24 seconds left sealed the deal.

The Warhawks shot 39 percent from the field in the win, while shooting six-for-18 from three-point range. The team shot 13-for-19 from the free throw line in the game.

Junior guard Malia Smith had 15 points in the win for the Warhawks.

The Falcons were led in scoring by Taylor Karge with 13, while Ali Clark had 12. The Falcons shot 37.3 percent from the field in the loss, while shooting 23.1 percent from the three-point line and shot seven-for-12 from the free throw line.

WIAC winning streak continues

UW-Whitewater continued its WIAC dominance against UW-Platteville on Jan. 14, matching the Pioneers punch for punch in the first quarter.

In that quarter, the largest lead was six after a Becky Deichl jumper made it 13-7.

After two Camri Conley free throws, the Warhawks had a four-point lead at 19-15. Soon after, Allison Prestegaard grabbed her own rebound and scored a layup in the paint to make 19-17 after the first.

In the second quarter, the Pioneers grabbed the lead after two free throws from Morgan Hartman to make it 21-19. After the Pioneers pushed the lead to seven at 28-21, Trewyn knocked down a three to make it 28-24 with 6:14 remaining in the first half.

The Pioneers later pushed lead up to eight after two free throws from Morgan Horstman. The Warhawks cut the Pioneers’ lead to two at the half at 36-34 after three pointers from Emily Kraft and Stewart.

Early in the third quarter, Trewyn gave the Warhawks the lead back after two free throws to make it 37-36. Later in the quarter, Trewyn pushed the lead to 11 after hitting another three to make it 53-42.

The Pioneers cut the Warhawks’ lead to six after two trips to the free throw line by Morgan Horstman. After successful free throws, the score was 58-52.

The Warhawks increased their lead back to 10 at the end of the quarter after a Kaelynn Lesniak basket and two free throws from Trewyn to make it 62-52.

Early in the fourth quarter, Trewyn made it a 14-point game with a basket after a Smith steal.

Later in the quarter, Kassie Bucholz got a basket to go and hit the free throw from the line to cut the Warhawks lead to four 73-69 with 21 seconds to go.

Smith extended the lead to six with two free throws before Hartman hit a three pointer to make it 75-72 with 11 seconds to go. Reilly Stewart sealed the game up with two free throws from the line to get the 77-72 win.

Trewyn again led the Warhawks in scoring against Platteville with a 28-point performance.

Stewart and Smith had 12 points apiece in the win.

UW-Whitewater shot 39.7 percent in the win, and shot six-for-14 from the three-point line. The Warhawks shot 21-for-24 from the free throw line.

UW-Platteville was led by Morgan Hartman led UW-Platteville in scoring with 17 points. Morgan Horstman and Allison Prestegaard both and 16. Lexis Macomber had 11.

The Pioneers shot 42.9 percent from the field, while shooting 25 percent from the three-point line in the loss. They shot 21 for 29 from the free throw line.

The Warhawks improve to 13-1 on the year, and are 4-0 in conference play. They will continue conference play at home against UW-Stout on Saturday at home.
