Fire engulfs two cars, spreads to third in Walmart parking lot

Dog rescued from burning van

A vehicle caught fire in the Walmart parking lot in Lake Geneva before 1 p.m. Wednesday and spread to two other vehicles.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, two vehicles were engulfed in flames, and the fire had spread to a third vehicle, according to the Lake Geneva Fire Department. Firefighters used foam and dry chemicals extinguishers to fight the fire, which spread to three adjoining cars.

During the operation, firefighters entered a burning van and rescued a dog that was trapped. Fire crews resuscitated the dog and transported it to the Lake Geneva Animal Hospital for treatment by veterinarians Scot and Mona Hodkiewicz.

No other injuries were reported. The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation. Crews were back in quarters at 3:02 p.m., according to the department.

“This was a serious and stubborn fire. Our crews worked hard to prevent further loss. We’re glad the dog was rescued and that no one was injured,” said Fire Chief John Peters.

Two of the vehicles were complete loses, and one sustained minor damage.
