Create a custom cast iron plate

Wisconsin Makers is sponsoring a scratch mold workshop Thursday, Sept. 29, in conjunction with an upcoming iron pour at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Taking place from 6 to 9 p.m. at Wisconsin Makers, 200 E. Clay St., Whitewater, this is family-friendly event is open to adults and children from throughout the area.

For $20, participants will be provided with a 5-by-5-inch square sand scratch mold that they can personalize with their own design.

Members of the Wisconsin Makers, the Friends of Wisconsin Makers, as well as anyone joining either group that night, will receive a $10-per-mold discount.

Persons unable to attend on the Sept. 29 workshop or who would like more time to complete their scratch mold at home can pick up blocks at the MakerSpace weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. though they should text/call ahead at (920) 650-2333.

On Saturday, Oct. 1, the “pour team” on the UW-Whitewater campus will fill each mold with molten cast iron. The completed castings may be picked up at Wisconsin Makers after 2 p.m. that day.

Teresa “Tree” Lind, a UW-Whitewater lecturer of art and design, is the professor in charge of the pour. She and her art students led a successful iron pour at Wisconsin Makers last spring that drew more than 60 participants and many spectators. The second annual iron pour is slated for April 1, 2017.

Wisconsin Makers is a community workshop and makerspace for residents of Walworth, Rock and Jefferson counties and beyond. Members have around-the-clock access to equipment for metals, woodworking, welding, fabric arts, matting and framing, foundry and blacksmithing, ceramics and pottery, machining, 3-D printing, laser-cutting and other hobbies and projects.
