Make a night of it

Whitewater PD joining National Night Out event Aug. 2 in Elkhorn

The Whitewater Police Department, in conjunction with the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office, is hosting the annual National Night Out celebration on Tuesday, Aug. 2, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Walworth County Fair Grounds, located at 411 E Court St., Elkhorn.

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local crime prevention programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police‐community partnerships, and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Residents are asked to spend the evening outside with their neighbors, police officers, fire fighters, and EMS personnel.

“The National Night Out event is a simple way for people to meet one another, have fun, and explore how they might work together to improve the safety and quality of their neighborhoods,” a press release from the Whitewater Police Department stated.

Entertainment will be provided, to include the following and more: explore emergency vehicles from the City of Whitewater Police and Fire Departments, University of Wisconsin‐Whitewater Police Services, the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the Wisconsin State Patrol, and many other municipalities. A SWAT vehicle will be on display along with ambulances, fire trucks, military vehicles and more.

Those that attend will have the opportunity to learn about bike safety, home and vehicle safety, car seat checks, drug and alcohol knowledge and prevention, sexual assault awareness, internet safety, and healthy living.

Additional features at the event will include K9 units that will provide search demonstrations and the search and rescue horses from WAMSTAR roaming the grounds.

Operation Click golf carts will be available for people to experience why they shouldn’t operate a vehicle while impaired.

Free food, beverages, and a bounce house will be provided.

Nelson’s Bus Service is providing a bus to transport Whitewater residents to the Walworth County Fair grounds. Those wishing to ride the bus should meet at Whitewater High School, 534 S. Elizabeth St., at 4 p.m. The bus will depart at approximately 4:15 p.m. Space is limited so only those residents who are unable to transport themselves to the event should use the bus service. No children younger than the age of 4 will be allowed to ride the bus.

“We are looking forward to seeing many people from the community attend this event,” the release stated.
