The Walworth County Sheriff’s Department released new information Thursday that clarified how a crash occurred that killed four people Saturday in the Town of Sharon.

Initially, deputies believed a 2011 pick-up truck occupied by the Venegas family of Delavan, three of whom were killed, failed to stop at a stop sign at County Highway K and Town Hall Road and was “t-boned” by a semi. A 2006 GMC Envoy, occupied by an Illinois couple, one of whom died in the crash, was also involved in the crash but the department’s initial release did not cite the sport utility vehicle’s role.

On Thursday, the Sheriff’s Department said investigators learned the Envoy, driven by Carol Terry, 67, of Rockford, Ill., who died in the crash, failed to stop at the stop sign on Town Hall Road as it was traveling east.

The pick-up, driven by Carlos Venegas, 26, was traveling south on County Road K and collided with the Envoy, which rolled into a field on the southeast corner of the intersection. The semi was traveling north on Highway K approaching Town Hall Road and was unable to avoid the crash, according to the Sheriff’s Department. It struck the truck on the passenger side and pushed it north on Highway K.

The department said the new information is different than originally reported because of conflicting witness statements, evidence and data collected at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
