The two top East Troy High School boys doubles teams kept their seasons alive Monday with first-round victories at the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 2 Big Foot Subsectional.

Now they’re just one step away from earning a spot in the state tournament.

Moving on for the Trojans were the No. 1 doubles team of juniors Brody Woodson and Vince Baxter and the No. 2 duo of Jordan and Jared Paullin.

Both teams competed Wednesday morning in East Troy with a berth at the state tournament on the line.

Woodson and Baxter defeated Edgerton 6-0, 6-1 in the first round to secure their sectional berth, while the Paullins beat Edgerton 6-0, 6-2 in the opening round, followed by a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over McFarland.

East Troy coach Dave Lindow was pleased with the efforts of both teams.

“(Woodson-Baxter) both have had great seasons in singles, and they have played well together in doubles,” he said. “They need to play with confidence and they will be just fine.

“(The Paullins) will play two matches (at the sectional) against Grafton and most likely Madison Edgewood to advance. They are peaking at the right time.”

East Troy’s No. 1 singles player, Johnathon Brehm, fell in a nearly three-hour marathon to Monroe. His state tournament fate will be decided later this week as a potential extra qualifier in the field, Lindow said.

“It was two identical players and ‘J.B.’ just came up short,” he said. “We are still hoping (he) can get a special qualifier at state. He has had a great season at No. 1 singles. We will find out Friday afternoon if that happens.”

At No. 2 singles, Nick Bourdo defeated Edgerton 6-2, 6-0 in the opening round, but lost 0-6, 0-6 to Madison Edgewood in his second match. At No. 3, Adam Wells won his opening-round match over McFarland, before he was knocked out by Madison Edgewood, 3-6, 3-6, and at No. 4, C.J. D’Amico fell 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 to Whitewater.

The No. 3 team of Joe Moede-Jered Brehm defeated Monroe 6-0, 6-1, but fell to McFarland 5-7, 1-6.

Edgewood won the team title with 24 points, followed by McFarland with 16, Whitewater with 14, East Troy with 12, Big Foot and Edgerton with four and Monroe with two. Delavan-Darien and Jefferson were held scoreless in the meet.

Prior to the subsectional, the Trojans competed in the Rock Valley Conference Meet, and came home with a third-place finish.

Bourdo won the title at No. 4 singles, while Woodson-Baxter were second and Moede-Jered Brehm and Johnathon Brehm were third.
