The Elkhorn Area High School boys tennis team closed the regular season with a non-conference rout against Big Foot May 19 at Walworth. The Elks beat the Chiefs 6-1.

Elkhorn competed Monday in a Division 1 subsectional tournament at Lake Geneva Badger.

The Elks won three of four singles matches against Big Foot and swept the doubles flights.

At No. 1 singles, the Elks’ Matt Nelson beat Jack Heidenreich 6-2, 6-2. Colin Passler beat Alexis Duran in straight sets at No. 3 singles and Nick White beat Evan Karabas 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.

Big Foot’s Liam McCarthy beat Elkhorn’s Brant Christensen in three sets at No. 2 singles. Christensen won the first set 6-0. McCarthy won the second set 6-3 and the tie breaker 11-9.

All matches in the doubles flights went three sets.

“Big Foot was a good example of how our doubles teams have gelled,” assistant coach Donna Neshek said. “We had some three-set matches, and won. The players are learning to finish these hard sets.”

At No. 1 doubles, Carter Olsen and Logan Riese beat Michael Heidenreich and Adrian Hernandez 6-4 in the first set before losing the second set 6-2. Olsen and Riese won the tie breaker 10-7.

The Elks’ Joe Korosec and Drayke Webster beat Logan Grunow and Hamilton Smith 6-4 in the first set before losing the second set 6-3 and winning the tie breaker 10-7.

Ian Tuck and Seth Kirkpatrick, at No. 3 doubles, lost the first set to Nelson Tovar and Ben Malone 6-4 before winning the second set 6-3 and the tie breaker 10-5.

At the subsectional meet, those who reach the semifinals in Flight 1 in singles or doubles play and those who reach the finals in Flights 2, 3, or 4 singles and Flights 2 and 3 doubles advanced to a sectional tournament Wednesday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the University of Wisconsin campus.

The top four finishers in Flight 1 and the top finisher in Flight 2 in singles and doubles at each sectional, plus special qualifiers determined by the State Seeding Committee, play in the Division 1 State Tennis Championships June 2-4 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
