The Elkhorn Area High School boys golf team saved its strongest performance of the season, so far, for the Southern Lakes Conference Tournament May 18 at Twin Lakes Country Club.

The Elks posted a season-low team score of 366 and finished sixth.

Elkhorn competed Tuesday in a WIAA Division 1 regional tournament at Geneva National Golf Club in Lake Geneva.

“I’m very pleased with the guys,” Elks coach Steve Fisher said of his team’s performance at Twin Lakes. “They did a great job.”

Fisher said the Elks’ set a goal to score in the 90s and break 100 in each round, and that goal and trend continued at Twin Lakes.

Twin Lakes Country Club features small greens, and Fisher said hitting those greens in regulation should lead to solid scores.

“Our guys did a good job at that,” Fisher said. “They limited the number of putts, and sometimes that’s been a problem of ours.”

Liam Ahler shot an 89 and finished 17th overall. Steve Fisher said it is the third or fourth time this season Ahler broke 90.

The Elks’ top four scorers finished in the top 25. Nick Keller shot a 90 and finished 19th and Dayne Fisher finished 23rd with a 93. Nolan Shirk carded a 94 and finished 25th. Kyle Schoeneberg shot a 97.

Badger’s Luke Borneuf finished one under par at 70 and won individual medalist honors. Badger won the team title (313).

Wilmot finished second (333), Union Grove third (338) and Westosha Central fourth (356). Waterford finished fifth (357), Burlington seventh (366) and Delavan-Darien eighth (415).

Steve Fisher said the Elks faced stiff competition in the Badger regional meet. In addition to Elkhorn and Badger, Beloit Memorial, Burlington, Delavan-Darien, Janesville Craig, Janesville Parker, Milton and Union Grove also competed at Geneva National.

“We’re going to have to play very well to move on,” Fisher said prior to the meet. “Even if we don’t I’m extremely happy with how we did this year. I’m very proud of the guys.”

The top four teams and top four individuals not part of one of the top five teams advanced from the regional to a June 1 sectional tournament at Watertown Country Club.

The top two teams and top three individuals not part of one of the top two teams advance from the sectional meet to the WIAA State Boys Golf Tournament June 6 and 7 at University Ridge in Madison.
