The 52nd annual Borg Invitational took place Friday, and the Delavan-Darien boys and girls track team’s head coach, Jeff Tortomasi, said the meet was wet but successful.

“This long-standing traditional meet uses a unique format in that it limits entries but is expanded with two additional races including the 600 and the 1000-meter runs,” Tortomasi said.

For the girls, Delavan-Darien took fifth out of seven teams, totaling 89 points. On the boys side, the Comets took fourth, with 105 total points. Lakeside Lutheran won for the girls while Westosha Central won the boys title.

The Borg Invitational also has a Traveling Trophy, which is given to the team with the top combined score, which was Lakeside Lutheran. For the girls, Delavan-Darien was led by Erin Sorg.

Sorg won both the 1600- and 3200-meter runs. She ran a 5:21.32 in the 1600, breaking the previous meet’s record of 5:27.5, set in 1993 by Fort Atkinson’s Meg Burgess.

Her time of 11:40.81 in the 3200 was a personal-best and according to Tortomasi, is closing in on both the 1600- and 3200-meter school records. As for the other girls, four different performances led to third-place finishes and four more led to fourth-place finishes.

Maddie Seuser earned her third-place finish in discus and fourth-place in the shot put. Katelyn Rosenow took fourth in the 400-meter dash and was a part of the third-place 4×800 relay team.

On the boys side, senior Mik Patel won the 600- and 1000-meter runs and anchored the second-place 4×400 relay team. Other members on that second-place team were Eric Fleming, Eli Gomez and Julien Riviere.

Riviere placed third in both hurdles races as well, while Eli Gomez finished third in the 800-meter run. Jacob Benzing also took third in the 100-meter dash and fifth in the shot put. Jason Hartman earned a second-place finish in the pole vault.

Outside of Patel, the only other boy to win an event was Ethan Cesarz, who took first in the shot put and fifth in the discus.

“Both teams were highly competitive and it was great to get this traditional meet in on a tough weather day,” Tortomasi said. “We will shift our focus to our most committed athletes and attempt to find a route to get some individuals qualified to the state meet.”

The teams was scheduled to compete Tuesday in the conference tournament, and then regionals begin Monday at Badger High School.
