The season hasn’t been smooth sailing for the Whitewater High School softball team, as the team started off 1-7 overall.

With only one game on its schedule this week, all the attention could be paid into that one game, on the road against Brodhead on Thursday.

The Whippets hit the road for the game, but added its second victory to the win column. Earlier in the season, the team beat Clinton 8-3 on the road, and against Brodhead Thursday, the Whippets put up 12 runs en route to its 12-5 victory.

Sara Johnson earned the win for the team with her five strikeouts over five innings while allowing two earned runs in the game. Izzy Zahn pitched the final two innings, striking out two and allowing three runs, just one of which was earned.

Offensively, the Whippets scored in every inning except the sixth. The team scored one in the first inning, four in the second, one in the third and then two apiece in the fourth, fifth and seventh.

Zahn’s double in the second inning “broke the game open,” said Whippet head coach Ron Sdano, scoring three runs. Zahn finished with a team-high four RBIs. Michaela Schumacher went 3-for-5 at the plate while scoring four runs and knocking in one.

The team is now 2-7 overall this season and will face Evansville and Jefferson this week. Evansville is 10-3 overall and in second place of the Rock Valley North Conference standings. Whitewater sits in last.

The first of the two games will begin at 4:45 p.m. Thursday at Evansville High School, while the second will take place at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday at Jefferson High School.
