Girls basketball beats Westosha heading into regional

The Badger High School co-op swim team competed at the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association state swim meet Friday in Madison.
Andrew Shane competed in two individual events and was also on the 400-yard freestyle relay team that made it to state despite finishing fourth at the sectional the week before.
Shane finished eighth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.01 and 11th in the 50-yard freestyle at 22.01. The relay team of Shane, Emmett Matthews, Paul Schulz and Logan Rogers finished 22nd.
Madison Memorial won the overall team state title with 314 points. Badger finished 26th with 17 points.
Shane, a senior who said he has been swimming competitively for nine years, attends Westosha Central High School. He attributes his swimming success to the support he has received from his family and his coaches throughout the years. This was Shane’s third trip to state.
Shane said it was a bit of a surprise that the 400 freestyle relay team made it to state after finishing fourth at the Kenosha Bradford sectional, but that showed how deep the sectional was in that event. Despite the fourth-place finish, the relay team’s time was still low enough to qualify for state.
“We all swam really well,” he said.
Shane said his goals for state were to get on the podium in the individual events and drop a little more time in the relay. While he didn’t get on the podium in the 50- or 100-yard freestyle, the relay team improved on its sectional time of 3:25.33 with a time of 3:24.85 at state.
Girls ready for regional
The Badger girls basketball team tuned up for the beginning of WIAA regional play with a 70-36 road thumping of Westosha Central on Feb. 16.
The Badgers blitzed the Falcons (3-18, 3-11 Southern Lakes Conference) 34-12 in the first half and cruised home after that. Sam Tisa led all scorers with 17 points, Jenn Freeman added 16, and Courtney Oomens had 11. Mackenzie Myers and Stephanie Dopuch each had 10 for the Falcons.
The Badgers might be peaking at just the right time, having won six in a row to end the regular season. Badger (12-10, 9-5 SLC) finished the conference season in third place behind Wilmot and Union Grove who shared the conference title at 12-2.
As the No. 9 seed, Badger traveled to No. 8 seed Muskego (11-11) on Tuesday night.
Badger boys drop two
The Badger boys lost a non-conference road game to Kenosha Indian Trail (9-11) 84-75 on Feb. 16. Badger led at the half 41-39, but Indian Trail outscored the Badgers by 11 in the second half to come away with the win.
Austin Jackson had a big night with 25 points. Jake Berhorst added 24, and Mason DuMez had 12. Josh Washburn matched Jackson with 25 and Deryk Ruple matched Berhorst with 24 for Indian Trail. Connor Sheehan added 11.
After making 14 three-pointers against Indian Trail, Badger went cold against Westosha Central on Feb. 19 making just nine of 34 attempts in a 67-56 road loss. The Falcons (15-6, 11-2 SLC) led 33-25 at the half, and the Badgers could not close the gap in the second half.
Berhorst led the Badgers with 23 points. Chase Kruger added 12 and Jackson had ten.
The loss dropped the Badgers into a tie with Delavan-Darien for third place in the SLC behind Westosha Central and Burlington (9-4). The Badgers host the Comets, who held off Elkhorn 49-47 on Friday, on Thursday. The Badgers also hosted Kenosha Bradford in a non-conference game Monday. The Badgers will begin WIAA regional play March 1.
