Choirs to perform annual Masterwork Concert Feb. 28

The East Troy High School Camerata and East Troy Community Choir will present their 11th annual Masterwork Concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 28, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 1975 Beulah Ave., East Troy.

This year’s feature works are Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Mass No. 7” (“Little Organ” mass); and Ariel Ramirez’s “Misa Criolla.”

Admission is $8 for adults, and $5 for students and seniors. Donations will also be gratefully accepted.

Musical settings of the Roman Catholic Mass have long been staples of the choral repertoire, and these two works will provide the audience with an interesting contrast in style. Haydn’s “Little Organ Mass,” written in the mid 1770s, exemplifies the Viennese Classic style. Argentinian composer Ariel Ramirez (1921-2010) wrote Misa Criolla in 1963. A synthesis of popular and liturgical forms, it is based on the melodies and rhythms of South American folk music, particularly those of Argentina.

The Misa Criolla was performed at the Vatican on Dec. 12, 2014, for the celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Latin America. Fellow Argentinian, Pope Francis, presided over the ceremony.

The East Troy Community Choir is celebrating its 10th anniversary season. It was established in the fall of 2005 to provide adults in the East Troy area the opportunity to sing in a choir. Their next concert will be the annual spring concert on May 1, with rehearsals beginning on March 15.
