Badger wrestlers take second in Verona

Boys basketball secures two wins

The Badger High School wrestling team took second at the Verona Duals on Saturday to Oconomowoc, the only team to beat the Badgers at the event.

Badger faced Oconomowoc in its first match of the day and lost 32-29. Getting wins for Badger were Michael Sanders (120 pounds), Stevie Kraus (126), Robby Mutimer (132), Chase Craig (145), Riggie Kelly (195), Cole Mikrut (285) and Beau LeDu (106). After the close loss, Badger saw nothing but victories.

Badger defeated Darlington-Blackhawk 50-22 behind wins from Kraus, Mutimer, Nate Otero (138), George Somerville (170), Nick Halpin (182), Kelly, Mikrut, LaDu, David Dublin (113) and Sanders.

Badger got wins from Mutimer, John Sulzer (138), Craig, Brad Mitchell (160), Somerville, Halpin, Kelly, Matt Szescol (220), Mikrut, LaDu, Dublin, Sanders and Kraus in a 75-4 win over Watertown.

In Round 4, the Badgers beat Verona 57-24. Winners for Badger included LaDu, Dublin, Sanders, Kraus, Mutimer, Craig, Somerville, Halpin, Kelly and Mikrut. Badger won its last match against Cedarburg 53-24 behind wins from Craig, Halpin, Kelly, Mikrut, LaDu, Dublin, Kraus, Sulzer and Mutimer.

The Badgers also defeated Wilmot 57-16 on Jan. 7 to remain undefeated in the Southern Lakes Conference at 4-0. Badger won the first three matches – Mutimer by pin, Otero by 11-2 major decision and Douglass Reuss by 9-5 decision at 145 pounds. After Craig lost a 19-7 major decision, Badger won the next six matches to take control. Michael Peter (160 pounds) won by 14-3 major decision, Somerville won by pin, Patrick Watrous won at 182 pounds by forfeit, Kelly won by pin, Szescol won by pin, and Mikrut won by forfeit. After losing two matches, Sanders and Kraus closed out the match with wins by 15-2 major decision and pin.

 

Badger boys win twice

The Badger boys basketball team improved to 4-6 (3-2 SLC) with a non-conference win over Kenosha Tremper and a conference win over Burlington.

The Badgers defeated Tremper (3-6) on the road 69-56 on Jan. 5. Badger led by just five at the half 29-24 but pulled away in the second half. Jake Berhjorst led the way with 19 points. Mason DuMez and Austin Jackson both added 14 each. Bobby Henley led Tremper with 17.

The Badgers beat Burlington (4-5, 3-2 SLC) at home on Saturday 73-63. The Badgers and Demons battled to a 28-28 tie at the half before Badger pulled away in the second half.

Berhorst led all scorers with 33 points, DuMez added 14 and Aidan Kokodynski had 12. Nick Klug led Burlington with 19. Cal Tully added 16.

The Badgers play at first-place Delavan-Darien on Friday and host Westosha Central on Tuesday.

 

Badger girls split two

The Badger girls basketball team managed to split two games last week despite missing Sam Tisa, who is out with a concussion, and Khloe Kleeman to an ankle injury.

Badger (5-7, 3-3) lost to Burlington (4-6, 3-2) at home 45-39 on Jan. 5. Burlington led 23-16 at the half and Badger could only shave one point off the deficit in the second half. Badger was led by Jennifer Freeman’s 12 points. Megan Wallace led the Demons with 17.

Badger defeated Westosha Central 43-31 at home on Jan. 8. Badger dominated the first half and led 27-12 at the break. Courtney Oomens led the Badgers with 15. No one from Central (2-10, 2-3) had more than six.

Badger travels to Delavan-Darien on Friday as part of a double-header with the boys and then plays at Beloit Turner on Monday.

 

Swim beats Whitewater

The Badger swim team defeated Whitewater 106-64 on Jan. 6.

Winners for Badger included:

  • Logan Rogers in the 200-yard freestyle (2:08.69) and the 100-yard freestyle (56.91)
  • Andrew Shane in the 500-yard freestyle (5:23.82) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.59);
  • Zach Kieszkowski in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.16);
  • The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Rogers, Alex Laing, Takuma Suzuki and Emmett Matthews (1:43.26).

Other top finishes included:

  • Suzuki – second in the 200-yard individual medley, 2:29.06;
  • Matthews – second in the 100 yard fly, 1:02.10;
  • Kieszkowski – second in the 100-yard freestyle, 58.24;
  • Clements – second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:58.41); • 200-yard freestyle relay team of Clements, Schulz, Conor Laroche, and Brandon Hirschmann – second, 1:54.70;
  • 400-yard freestyle relay team of Laing, Kieszkowski, Rogers and Shane – second, 3:51.11.
